Resolution Comparison: M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO vs. ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50-200mm F2.8-3.5 SWD

Blog

The autofocus on my ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50-200mm F2.8-3.5 SWD broke, so I purchased the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO for this year’s photography. I immediately went to a nearby pond to test it out with Eurasian Coots (Fulica atra). Since the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50-200mm F2.8-3.5 SWD can still be used in manual focus, I took this opportunity to compare the resolution of both lenses.

Before the shoot, I was expecting, or rather hoping, for a decisive victory for the 40-150mm. However, the results showed little to no difference between the two. To me, there seems to be a difference in rendering, with the 40-150mm better capturing the texture of the beaks, while the 50-200mm seemed superior in depicting feathers. The 40-150mm lens appears to have higher sharpness and contrast, giving the overall photo a more three-dimensional feel. As a result, I’ve come to re-appreciate how good the old 50-200mm lens is.

In today’s test, I also compared the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO+MC-20 with the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50-200mm F2.8-3.5 SWD and an old manual focus lens, the Ai Nikkor 300mm f2.8. I’ll discuss these results another time as it would be too long to cover here.

Until next time.
